How to Move Apps to an SD Card on Xiaomi (MIUI)

On most Xiaomi phones you can move a supported app to the SD card from the app's Storage & cache settings. The exact steps vary slightly by model and MIUI version (Xiaomi's custom Android interface).

How to move an app to the SD card

  1. Insert the SD card: make sure it is properly inserted into your Xiaomi device.
  2. Open Settings: open the Settings app.
  3. Go to Apps: tap Apps or Applications. Depending on your device and MIUI version, this may be listed as Apps or Installed apps.
  4. Select the app: find the app you want to move in the list of installed apps and tap it to open its details.
  5. Open storage: tap Storage & cache or a similar option.
  6. Change the storage location: if the app supports being moved, you'll see an option such as Storage location or Change storage. Tap it.
  7. Move the app: if the app can be moved, choose Change or Move to SD card.
  8. Confirm: accept any prompts to finish the move.

Not all apps can be moved to an SD card. Some apps, especially system apps or certain other types of apps, don't support this feature. Menu names and options may also vary by Xiaomi model and MIUI version.

If it doesn't work

  • If you can't find the option to move apps to the SD card, check Xiaomi's support website or the user manual for your device model.
  • MIUI updates can change where options are located in the Settings menu, so make sure your device is running the latest available software version.
